Slower since WD12?
November 03, 2008 10:32AM
Hi,

We have several customers complaining that their program is running slower since we released new versions of it with WD12 (we switched recently from WD11 to WD12).

Is there something that can be done about it? All customers are using Windows XP.

Thanks a lot for any information.
Joris.

Hi Joris,

It is quite possible that they are seeing some initial slowness due to JITing (Just In Time Compiling), however, I personally have not noticed any problems with this.

The question is; Are they noticing speed degradation while accessing the data OR is it just in general (ie starting the program etc).

Cheers!

Hi,

How is the install / exe being handled. Are you having the dll framework included in the exe. Each time the exe is run, the dll's are extracted. This is time consuming

Thank you both for your answers.
Indeed the dll's are included in the executable.
The program is slow when accessing the data. It has never been spitfire, but now it became a lot slower. Not only in classic mode, also in Client/Server (we can use both).
I have tried to re-index the database but it didn't help much.
other customers are not complaining about it. Of course there are differences in database size, hardware etc...
We will try to put extra RAM in the server of the customer using HFCS. Maybe this can make a difference?

Regards,
Joris.

Hello Joris

In our experience with classic HF across networks it is also good to look at the network switches and workstation network cards. If they are running at 100mb then an upgrade to 1gb hardware is not expensive and gives imediate results. Most of our larger sites have had to switch to terminal services to maintain speed as the data builds up

Hello Joris,

Do you use SELECT TOP queries (i.o. just SELECT)?
In our application SELECT TOP seemed 'much' slower than SELECT (in windev12, in windev10 this was not the case)

Wim
