I've tried this and all I get is an empty field in SQL, can you give some code showing exactly how you are achieving this please?

Have a look at HlinkMemo to insert the image directly into the database field. Its very straight forward. On the other hand, if you are on a form and are using an image control linked to the field, use fImageSelect to update the control, which will subsequently save the image to the db when you save.
